3 Simple Ways to Reduce Waste in Your Home

Posted on: 21 July 2015

In the United States people highly value convenient, one-time-use items, and the landfills attest to that. But you don't have to be wasteful or give your garbage specialist a big load to deal with. Here are three simple ways you can reduce the amount of waste your home produces.

Eliminate Paper Products

You should try to eliminate paper products as much as you can. You may need to do a little more washing, but helping the environment is worth the effort. It is estimated that the United States uses approximately 69 million tons of paper products, which you can help eliminate by doing your part. Paper products end up in landfills, which are increasingly growing with trash. And the excess trash pollutes the ecosystem. So consider using cloths for napkins.

You can also consider replacing the following items:

  • Regular diapers for cloth diapers
  • Toilet paper for family cloths (sold in health food stores or online)
  • Female menstrual pads with cloth pads (also sold in your local health food store or online)

You can also use emails rather than regular mail and other similar changes. A garbage specialist can help you come up with more ways to reduce paper waste.

Only Buy Food That You Will Eat

You might find that some of the food you buy spoils before you eat it, and you have to throw it away. This might be due to buying more food than you can eat. To help prevent this, you may want to consider buying just enough food to get you through the week, and then buy more the following week when you need it. You can try this for food that spoils quickly. For other food that can last longer, you can buy in bulk.

Try Using a Composting Bin

You do not have to throw away your food scraps. You can put them in a composting bin. A composting bin will break down your scraps, which will prepare them to be used in soil. You can use this in your garden, or you can also take the composting material to local community gardens to help enrich the soil. You can find a composting bin online, or you might find one in your local hardware store. The following are just a few things that you can put in your bin:

  • eggshells
  • vegetables or fruits
  • bones
  • coffee grounds
  • paper products

These are just a few ways to reduce the waste your family produces. Talk to your local garbage dumpster service to get additional tips.
