How To Avoid Getting Maggots In Your Dumpster Rental

Posted on: 6 May 2021

Although fly larvae can do you no harm, they're not very attractive, and you don't want them crawling in your dumpster rental. But because these creatures feed on decomposing organic materials, you can still find them in your dumpster despite trying your best to get rid of them.

Flies reproduce by laying eggs on waste food. The presence of larvae in your garbage bin points out they succeeded in laying eggs on the food waste in your cooking area before you dumped it. Here's how you will keep these creatures from accessing your dumpster bin.

Always Close the Dumpster Bin

Though obvious, it's a practice that many people overlook. If the dumpster rental is overflowing with waste and closing the lid is challenging, flies will easily access it and lay their eggs. If your kitchen waste is significant and can't fit in your garbage bin, contact any dumpster rental company and get a dumpster for rent to keep the garbage bin from overflowing.

You can also recycle your waste food by composting them and using the compost in your garden. Also, purchase what you need to avoid throwing more waste food.

Use Natural Herbs and Mothballs

Natural herbs can keep the flies away from your dumpster bin. Hanging them around the dumpster bin gives the flies a hard time entering the bin. You can also rub the leaves of these herbs on the outer surface of the bin.

Consider also smearing citronella on the surface of the bin. The smell keeps these flies away, and you will not have any maggots crawling in the bin. Lastly, put mothballs in the bin. Mothballs release a sweet smell during the hot months. If you have food waste like meat or fish, wrap and put them in the freezer until garbage collectors come for them.

Keep the Bin Dry and Clean Using Vinegar

Instead of using ordinary plastic bags, consider biodegradable ones. The ordinary plastic bags trap any moisture that evaporates from the waste food, making the waste food soggy. However, the biodegradable ones allow the moisture out, and in doing so, the waste food dries out, minimizing the chances of attracting flies. You can also absorb the dumpster bin moisture by spreading newspapers at its bottom.

When cleaning your kitchen, use vinegar. Flies do not like the smell of vinegar, and they will keep away from your home and kitchen garbage. For more information about how to properly manage your dumpster, contact a dumpster rental service
